The Role of the School Counselor
Primary functions:
- To provide student assistance for those students experiencing a personal or social concern that is interfering with learning.
- To advocate for individual students and systemic change when an aspect of the learning environment is interfering with learning
- To manage the school counseling program in an efficient and effective manner.
Major Job Responsibilities: Counseling, Student Advocacy, Awareness
- To identify local counseling needs related to personal and social development
- To provide student assistance for students having personal or social concerns that interfere with learning including individual counseling, group counseling, crisis counseling, and referrals.
- To provide consultation to administrators, teachers, and parents regarding individual or groups of students.
- To coordinate student assistance activities delivered by the school counselors with student assistance activities delivered by others including teachers involved in advisor-advisee programs, peer helpers, those providing informational groups, and community member providing mental health services
Some of the programs I have been responsible for developing or bringing into our school are: In-School Peer mentoring, The Good Samaritan Fund, Suicide Prevention (Yellow Ribbon), Steve Walton; Drug Expert Presentation, Supervision of a Social Work Student who assisted with Counseling needs, Peer Mediation training, Youth for Christ, Marriage and Family therapist, Laurianne Kelly, Partnered with FCSS and Parent Link to bring in Parenting Sessions, clothing drive.
* This counseling program is possible because of student, teacher and parent referrals. Parental consent is not required and all information shared stays strictly confidential.
